Apparently consumers don't care where insurance premium goes

On Monday, I asked for comments on how much of the insurance premium should go toward patient care. The new health law, the Affordable Care Act, requires that it be at least 80 percent for small groups and individual policies and 85 percent for large groups. The only ones I've heard from so far are insurers opposed to the rule.

**(earlier post)**

The new health law, the Affordable Care Act, requires that insurers spend most of the premium dollars they receive on actual patient care beginning in September (85 percent for large-group plans, 80 percent for small groups and individuals.

Last week, the state held a public hearing to get people's opinions about that. Surprise! Nearly everyone who spoke -- including the Insurance Commissioner -- thinks that requirement is too high.

This week, on the Analysis and Opinion page, we'll run written statements submitted by some of those who spoke at the hearing.

If there is anyone in this state who thinks the spending requirement is a good idea, please send it to us and we'll post it. Send it to Carol.Gentry@HealthNewsFlorida.org.
